About the Council

Serenje District earned its District status in 1939, making one of the oldest Districts in Zambia. Geographically, it covers an approximate surface area of 17,406.70km²and shares boundaries with Chitambo, Lavushimanda, Lusangazi, Nyimba, Mkushi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is endowed with fertile land, good rainfall patterns and abundant water bodies. Serenje is also the home of the beautiful Kundalila and Chipota falls which gives is great potential to be a tourism destination.

 

Traditionally, it is the home of the Lala speaking people who are governed by six Chiefs. These are; His Royal Highness Senior Chief Muchinda, His Royal Highness Chief Chisomo, Her Royal Highness Chieftainess Serenje, His Royal Highness Chief  Kabamba, His Royal Highness Chief Mailo, and His Royal Highness Chief Chibale of the Muchinda, Chisomo, Serenje, Kabamba, Mailo and Chibale Chiefdoms respectively.

Administratively, it is segmented into two (2) Constituencies; Serenje Central Constituency and Muchinga Constituency which are further broken down into twenty one (21) Wards.

According to the 2022 CSO report, Serenje recorded a total population of approximately 158,192 people whose major economic activities are agriculture and mining.  

 

If you are looking to invest in our district, Serenje offers the following opportunities;

Mining – Muchinda Chiefdom is a prominent producer of manganese and other mineral deposits such as quart, clay and iron ore. Additionally minerals being explored include gemstones, copper, graphite and silica.

 

Manufacturing – agro-processing plants for agricultural products such as; – maize, soya beans, cassava, millet, sweet and irish potatoes). The district also has mineral processing plants for manganese, quart, iron and clay.

 

Agriculture – Serenje has 5 farm blocks – Nansanga, Sasa, Kasanka, Munte and Luombwa which present a good opportunity to invest in agro-business

 

Tourism – The district is endowed with tourism facilities such as Kundalila Falls in Chief Serenje Chiefdom and Chipota Falls in Chief Kabamba’s Chiefdom. Additionally, the District has a game Management area that presents opportunities for game viewing, canoeing/ boating, fishing, camping, and game ranching

 

Fisheries and Livestock Farming – Serenje has numerous streams and rivers which are favourable for livestock production and breeding. The agro-ecological zone within which the district favours the establishment of permanent pastures for livestock such as cattle (both dairy and beef), sheep, goats, pigs and chickens

 

Housing Development – Due to the growing population which is currently projected at 158, 192

(CSO, 2022) compared to 117,880 (CSO, 2010), Serenje faces challenges with decent housing. The availability of residential plots in the planned township in Ibolelo Ward presents present an opportunity for real estate business ventures as there is a ready market The inhabitants of the District mainly engage in subsistence farming which is the main source of income for most of the local people.

An agricultural, industrious, and social economically viable district by 2032.

Mission Statement

To effectively utilize resources in the district so as to provide improved and adequate services that are specific to societal needs and in line with government policies, and also help in providing an enabling environment for all stakeholders so as to promote inclusive planning, investment opportunities and effective management of resources.

Goal

To promote human, environment and economic development through improved and adequate service provision and facilitation of investment in the district by 2033
