The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced the introduction of an online voter pre-registration system as part of its preparations for the forthcoming general elections. The initiative is designed to make the registration process more inclusive, efficient, and accessible to all eligible citizens.
Speaking during the Central Province briefing in Kabwe, ECZ Commissioner McDonald Chipenzi explained that the new system will enable eligible voters to initiate their registration online before completing it physically with biometric and portrait capture at designated centres.
โThe Online Pre-Registration portal will run from September 15 to November 3, giving citizens the opportunity to conveniently begin the registration process before physically presenting themselves to registration officers,โ Mr. Chipenzi said.
The exercise is scheduled to run from October 13 to November 11 in all 156 constituencies. It will be conducted under the Commissionโs constitutional and legal mandate, which requires the registration of all eligible citizens as voters.
Commissioner Chipenzi stressed that the success of the voter registration exercise will depend on collective effort, professionalism, and transparency from all ECZ staff.
โThe Mass Voter Registration is about inclusion and accessibility, ensuring that no eligible citizen, whether in urban centres or remote areas, is left out,โ he stated in a speech delivered on behalf of the ECZ Chairperson.
Meanwhile, Provincial Registration Officer (PRO) Mr. Clint Susiku urged District Voter Education Committee (DVEC) Secretaries and Human Resource Coordinators to ensure that the objectives of the briefings are fully implemented in their districts.
โDistrict Voter Education Coordinators, you are the secretaries of your district voter education committees. You must therefore spearhead the allocation of educational materials and resources in your respective districts,โ Mr. Susiku said.
In his welcoming remarks, Kabwe District Registration Officer (DRO) Mr. Jovax Ngoma reminded participants of the need to produce an accurate votersโ register at the end of the exercise.
Following the mass registration, the inspection of the provisional register of voters will take place from February 17 to 23, 2026, while the final votersโ register is expected to be certified by April 30, 2026.
The ECZ has since called on all stakeholders, including provincial and district electoral officers, voter education coordinators, and human resource coordinators to diligently play their roles in safeguarding the credibility of Zambiaโs electoral process.
