NANSANGA, CENTRAL PROVINCE โ€“ The Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Jack Mwiimbu (MP), has officially flagged off the maize harvest at Nansanga Correctional Farm, where production is expected to generate over K25.7 million in revenue against a K10.8 million production cost, yielding a projected profit of K14.9 million.
Speaking during the harvest flag off, Hon. Mwiimbu hailed the Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) for its critical role in supporting national food security amid widespread drought conditions.
Nansanga Correctional Farm is set to produce 2,692.5 metric tons of maize from 500 hectares, equivalent to 53,849 x 50kg bags, which will be sold to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).
Commanding Officer Deputy Commissioner Enias Mbao confirmed the farmโ€™s performance and financial projections, reinforcing ZCSโ€™s reputation for resilience and innovation in agriculture.
Hon. Mwiimbu commended ZCS for surpassing expectations during a tour of correctional farms in Central Province, noting that the institution is expected to contribute 15,000 metric tons of maize to national reserves this year.
โ€œThis is a commendable achievement under tough circumstances,โ€ he said. โ€œAgriculture remains a cornerstone of our development agenda, and we call on all ministries and institutions to prioritize it as a matter of national importance.โ€
He further emphasized government support for correctional agriculture, pledging to address energy-related challenges like power outages by enhancing partnerships with ZESCO and other stakeholders.
ZCS Commissioner General Fredrick Chilukutu thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for his continued support, revealing that 1,000 hectares had been devoted to maize production in Central Province alone.
Central Province Minister Hon. Nkulukusa Mwabashike also praised ZCSโ€™s commitment to food security, referencing the Presidentโ€™s target to reach 10 million metric tons of maize by 2030.
He called for increased land cultivation and improved yields to meet this national goal.
Amid ongoing climate challenges, the Minister urged security wings to take a leading role in promoting climate resilience and safeguarding the nation’s food supply.
Meanwhile, District Commissioner Mr, Paul Masuwa in his welcoming remarks thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for his continued support towards developing the district.
With initiatives like those at Nansanga Correctional Farm, Zambia is positioning itself not only to achieve domestic food security but also to become a net exporter of agricultural produce.
