Tobacco Board of Zambia Targets 80 million Kg by 2028

Serenje, Zambia – The Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ) has set an ambitious target of producing 80 million kilograms of tobacco by 2028, reaffirming the crop’s critical role in Zambia’s agricultural sector and economic growth.
Speaking during the TBZ Field Day in Serenje’s Mulilima area under the theme “Sustainable Tobacco Production,” Guest of Honour District Agricultural Coordinator (DACO) Katumwa Mutandi emphasized the need for farmers to work extra hard to meet this target.
“Achieving this goal requires farmers to embrace sustainable farming methods, use the right seeds, and implement best agricultural practices,” said Mr. Mutandi.
He further urged farmers to adhere to afforestation policies by planting trees to replace those used during tobacco processing, adding that sustainable farming is key to ensuring the long-term viability of the industry while protecting the environment.
DACO reiterated that tobacco remains a major contributor to Zambia’s foreign exchange earnings, with USD 138 million generated from exports in the last season alone.
TBZ Chief Operating Officer Mr. Tyndale Kasongole encouraged farmers to seize the opportunity to learn from experts and adopt modern farming techniques to boost productivity.
“Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, and tobacco farming plays a vital role in rural development. By improving cultivation techniques and fostering collaboration, we can ensure higher yields, better quality produce, and improved incomes for our farmers,” Mr. Kasongole stated.
Serenje District currently leads in tobacco production within the province, contributing 15% of the total output. The district is also recognized as a top producer of sweet potatoes and soybeans, demonstrating its pivotal role in Zambia’s crop diversification agenda.
The TBZ Field Day serves as a platform for farmers to gain insights, exchange ideas, and adopt innovative approaches to tobacco cultivation. With strong collaboration among stakeholders, Zambia is on the path to achieving its 80-million-kg production target, securing both economic growth and sustainable farming for future generations.
