Mr. Masuwa highlighted the project’s potential for local empowerment, emphasizing that the construction phase will provide immediate employment opportunities for community members.
“This is not just about constructing a new building, but about building hope and creating opportunities,” Masuwa stated during the groundbreaking ceremony.
He particularly praised Choppies’ commitment to prioritizing local employment, which he saw as a critical pathway to supporting Serenje’s youth.
The Council Chairperson echoed these sentiments, revealing that the Local Authority carefully evaluated Choppies’ proposal and provided three strategic land options.
The company has now secured a certificate of title for the chosen parcel, a testament to the local government’s efficient and transparent processes.

• Enhancing shopping convenience,
• Improving infrastructure in the town’s central business district, and
• Signaling confidence in Serenje’s economic potential
Both government officials (DC and Council Chairperson) stressed their commitment to supporting Choppies’ investment.
“Our doors are always open,” Masuwa assured, “We are here to facilitate, support, and ensure a smooth operational environment.”
Managing Director Jyothishi T. Canhirandan said Choppies Zambia is pressing forward with an ambitious expansion strategy beyond traditional retail.
“Our supermarket is more than just a building,” he stated. “It will provide a conducive shopping environment and include additional retail spaces to benefit the entire community.”
The expansion is particularly significant for Choppies, which has grown from a single outlet in Kanyama to an impressive network of 39 branches across Zambia.
The company currently employs more than 1,800 Zambian citizens and has set an ambitious target of reaching 2,000 employees in the next two to three years
