Serenje Town Council wishes to provide an update and reassurance to residents regarding the ongoing issue of uncollected garbage in Ibolelo Ward and surrounding areas. The council acknowledges the frustration caused by the current situation and remains committed to resolving it swiftly and effectively.
The accumulation of garbage has been caused by the unexpected breakdown of the Council owned tractor and two TLB machines that are critical for refuse collection in both Serenje Central and Muchinga constituencies. These unforeseen mechanical issues have disrupted normal waste management services, resulting in the backlog of uncollected garbage.
To address the crisis, Serenje Town Council has today outsourced transport appropriate to load with casual labour to clear some selected section of the Central Business District. It has further commenced the engagement of key stakeholders, particularly from mining and smelting firms operating in the district, to assist with equipment for garbage disposal.
The council is encouraged by the positive response from these partners and is confident that their support will provide immediate relief to affected areas within the week ending Saturday 11th January 2025.
Additionally, a new Skip Truck procured by the council is currently in transit and being cleared at the Tanzania-Zambia border. Once it arrives, the truck will significantly improve waste collection capacity and ensure more reliable service delivery across the district.
While these measures are being implemented, Serenje Town Council continues to explore long-term solutions to strengthen its waste management system and avoid similar disruptions in the future. We appeal to residents for their continued patience and cooperation as we work together to restore cleanliness and public health.
The council remains committed to providing timely updates and transparent communication as we navigate this temporary challenge. Serenje Town Council deeply values the support of its residents and stakeholders, without whom sustainable development would not be possible.
Together, we can ensure a cleaner, healthier Serenje.
