Serenje, Zambia – September 13, 2024
In a bid to cushion vulnerable households from the harsh economic impacts of last season’s drought, the government has officially launched the Cash for Work (CFW) Programme in Serenje District.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), is set to provide temporary income to struggling communities through public works projects.
Officiating at the launch, Serenje District Commissioner Mr. Paul Masuwa highlighted the importance of the program, describing it as “a new chapter of resilience, hope, and empowerment for the people of Serenje.”
The Commissioner emphasized that the program represents the government’s commitment to ensuring no Zambian is left behind during challenging times.
“This initiative provides financial relief and creates and maintains community assets, laying a foundation for long-term development,” the District Commissioner added.
According to the guidelines, the Cash for Work program will engage participants in various public works, such as drainage cleaning, pothole patching, and community bridge rehabilitation.
In return, they will receive a daily wage of K60, with each expected to work for 10 days, earning K600 per month on a rotational basis.
Serenje’s Council Chairperson Mr. Staivous Mulumba echoed these sentiments, stressing that the program empowers communities through job creation and infrastructure development.
“By participating in public works, our people will earn wages to meet immediate needs, especially in terms of food security,” the Chairperson stated.
The Council Secretary Mr. Stan Mwanakayaya elaborated on the types of projects under the program, which include unblocking culverts, planting trees, and rehabilitating boreholes.
He said local structures such as Ward Development Committees (WDCs) and Community Welfare Assistance Committees (CWACs) will play a key role in identifying beneficiaries and overseeing projects.
Ibolelo Ward Development Committee (WDC) chairperson Mr. Kelvin Mtonga has thanked President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration for the initiative, adding the program will help alleviate economic challenges caused by drought in communities.
